SECTION 16974
COPPER CABLING SYSTEM
PART 1 GENERAL
1.01 SUMMARY
A.Section specifies copper wire, cable, associated connections and termination hardware used on
telecommunication systems.
B.The system shall have the capacity to support analog and digital, voice, and data applications,
on a common cabling platform.
1.02 DEFINITIONS
A.Attenuation: The decrease in signal strength as it travels through a transmission medium,
measured in dB's.
B.Crosstalk: An inductive type of interference caused by electronic signals from one line being
coupled into adjacent line(s).
C.Decibel (dB): A standard unit for measuring transmission gain or loss and relative power level.
D.Delay Skew: The adverse effect of data signals traveling at different speeds along separate
pairs of cable.
E.dBM: Absolute measure of signal power where ØdBM is equal to one milliwatt.
F.Distribution Frame: A structure with terminations for connecting the permanent wiring of a
facility in such a manner that interconnection by cross-connections may be ready made.
G.Distribution Panel: A wiring board that provides a patch panel function and mounts in a rack.
H.Equal Level Far-End Crosstalk (EFLEXT): The unwanted signal coupling from the adjacent
pairs onto any other pair, as measured at the end of the cable opposite to the signal source (far-
end).
I.Return Loss: A measure of the strength of reflected signals caused by impedance mismatches
along a cable run.
1.03 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
A.A cable system consisting of copper cables, routed between various telecommunications outlets
and their designated equipment room, and between main equipment room and satellite
equipment rooms, as shown on the Drawings.

1.05 SUBMITTALS
A.Prior to Installation:
1.Submit manufacturer’s product specifications indicating all specific material and
components to be used.
2.Submit qualification data as specified in Article 1.6 to demonstrate capabilities and
experience in the following areas:
a.Cable handling and placement techniques.
b.Termination.
c.Testing as defined in Article 3.3.
3.Submit in a single document, all items to be labeled, and the labeling identification
method. Include a detailed sketch with examples.
4.Submit testing and acceptance plan, a minimum of 21 days prior to beginning of testing.
Submittal shall include a sample of testing documentation and proposed test equipment.
5.Submit shop drawings, specification sheets, and field sketches for any Contractor proposed
deviations to these specifications or design as reflected on the Drawings.
B.Up on Completion of Work:
1.Submit red-lined Drawings indicating:
a.Final detailed cable routing and outlet locations.
b.Final equipment room layout/footprint and elevation detail.
c.Final equipment rack/panel arrangements.
d.Final riser cable composition for all components.
2.Submit Cable Schedule. Provide in both paper and electronic format. Configure as
described in Article 3.1.K. Provide one copy of the associated cabling system spreadsheet
for each equipment room and attach to equipment rack. Provide in protective covering or
binder.
3.Submit at completion of successful validation, one copy of the cable testing documentation
in electronic format and in three-ring binder, indexed and organized.
1.06 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A.Manufacturer's Qualifications: Firm regularly engaged in the manufacture of unshielded
twisted pair and coaxial cables, connectors and hardware and have products in satisfactory use
for a minimum of five years.
B.Installer's Qualifications: Firms with at least 5 years of successful installation experience with
projects utilizing unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cabling, Category 5e and Category 6 in
compliance with EIA/TIA-568. The project lead technician must be BICSI certified at the
technician level or be Hubbell Mission Critical®certified prior to leading the installation of
cabling on this project. The same technician must be the lead technician for duration of the
project or be replaced by a technician with the same credentials.

PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.01 GENERAL
A.Section delineates the performance requirements and characteristics for cables and associated
hardware which will be used as a copper transmission media.
B.All like items of products provided must be of the same manufacturer and meet the performance
requirements for that item as shown in this specification or industry standards, whichever is
mor e stringent.
C.Return air plenum environments are indicated on the drawings. All cables shall meet or exceed
the appropriate flame retardant requirement for the area in which they are installed (NEC type-
requirements).
2.02 HORIZONTAL CABLING
A.Provide horizontal cables to connect each telecommunications outlet to its designated
equipment room.
B.Provide outer sheath with permanent, continuous color as follows:
1.Voice: Blue.
2.Data: White.
3.Data Riser: Red.
4.Video: Black.
C.Category 5 Enhanced Voice Cable:

e.Special applications: dedicated EMCS patch panel -provide separate 16 port patch
panels with sufficient number of Category 6 jacks to terminate all cables serving all
EMCS panels.

5.Provide sufficient Category 5e, M66 (50x4) blocks to ter minate all voice pairs to be
located in each equipment room. Mount blocks on 183 series metal backboards with 89D
brackets. Use 187B1 metal backboards with mushroom spools for wire management.
Backboards shall be double stacked as shown on detail. Always provide an empty set of
double-stacked backboards in each telecom room.
6.Provide all additional wire management hardware to organize all cabling and jumper
wiring. Acceptable manufacturers are as follows and listed in alphabetical order:

2.03 RISER CABLE

PART 3 EXECUTION
3.01 INSTALLATION
A.Prior to procurement and installation, Contractor must attend a pre-installation meeting with
Owner and Engineer. Meeting schedule to be coordinated with Owner/Engineer.
B.Schedule and coordinate the installation of the facilities with the Owner’s Representative.
Comply with all safety and governing body regulations.
C.Install facilities in accordance with product manufacturer recommendations/guidelines,
Drawings and approved Shop Drawings.
D.Preparation of Interior Raceway Systems:
1.Ensure that all cable tray, conduit and other confined routing are free and clear of all debris
befor e cable placement.
2.Cable shall not be installed into conduit ends that are not reamed and bushed.
E.Cable lengths for Category 6, 24 AWG, solid copper, 4-pair UTP data cables must not exceed
90 meters. All cable runs greater than 90 meters must be identified prior to installation.
F.Provide sufficient termination hardware to terminate all cables, and all pairs, unless otherwise
indicated. Provide all wire management hardware required to organize all patch cabling and
jumper wiring.
G.Elevator Equipment Rooms: Contractor to leave 30’ cable coil at outlet location for use by
ot hers.
H.Pull cords: All conduit segments shall have a pull cord installed through its entire length.
Sleeves are excluded.

I.Riser Conduit Sleeve Usage:
1.Install copper cables in separate stacked riser conduit sleeves from the riser fiber optic riser
cables.
2.Completely utilize full placement capacities of each riser conduit sleeve b ef or e placing
cable in the next empty conduit sleeve.
J.Cable Identification:
1.Provide a detailed sketch to the Owner’s Representative of the cable identification method
to be used on the job prior to installation.
2.All cable shall be labeled both on the outlet and the patch panel with an alpha/numeric
identification code using the following format: (T-1) indicates telephone one, (T-2)
indicates telephone two, (D-1) indicates data one, (D-2) indicates data two, etc. If more
than one room is used, for example Room B, then this will be indicated by a permanent
label on the communications outlet.
3.Each horizontal cable shall be labeled to indicate floor and outlet number. All cable will
be labeled at the termination point in the equipment room and on the wall plate.
4.Exceptions: outlets serving EMCS panels shall have ports designated as "EMCS-1 and
EMCS-2 and chilled water bridge cabinet connections as chilled water-1 or chilled water-
2" incorporated to this labeling scheme, and reflected on the patch panel labels.
5.When the Owner’s cable identification methods do not specify format, cable identification
method shall comply with EIA/TIA 606 as a minimum and be coordinated with the
Owner’s Representative.
6.Us e professional, non-er asable, adhesive, machine printed labels utilizing the approved
cable identification method.
K.Cable Schedule:
1.The entir e cabling system shall be documented and provided in both hard copy and floppy
disk copy. The documentation shall be a spreadsheet (Microsoft Excel compatible format).
The contractor shall attach a complete cable schedule spreadsheet to one of the floor racks
in each telecom room. Information shall be presented in the following format:

3.02 GROUNDING
A.Provide grounding connections for cable systems as required by manufacturer's
recommendations and in compliance with EIA/TIA-607 and as required by the NEC.
B.Bond all installed equipment racks, cable tray, and other metallic components to grounding bus
bar in telecom room with minimum 6AWG, copper, green colored insulation.
3.03 TESTING
A.Prepare and submit test procedures for testing the system to the Owner’s Representative prior to
installation and any formal testing. All test procedures must be pre-approved prior to the
general testing of the cables.
B.Perform a ll tests and provide all test equipment, tools and personnel required to conduct test,
validation, and inspections.

C.Notify Owner’s Representative of date and time of any for ma l testing 48 hours prior to the test
being performed. The Owner Representative shall have the opportunity to witness the testing.
D.Test procedures shall confirm that each specification statement has been met or exceeded.
Provide an actual demonstration of each system requirement.
E.Test UTP cable in accordance with EIA/TIA-568. Each UTP cable shall be tested and the
results documented and delivered to the Owner’s Representative.
F.All tests are subject to validation by means of a re-test, by Contractor, in the presence of the
Owner’s Representative.
G.Engineer will validate test results by requesting ad hoc testing, randomly selected, using
Contractor’s test equipment and personnel. Validation testing will be scheduled with
Contractor after all test results have been submitted and approved.
H.Owner reserves the right to perform independent testing subsequent to Contractor/Engineer
validations and prior to acceptance.
I.Include the following UTP testing parameters as a minimum for both Category 5e and Category
6, unless otherwise indicated. Category 5e horizontal voice cabling can only be tested to
Category 3 requirements due to the use of Category 3 USOC jacks.
1.Continuity and Polarity Tests:
a.DC resistance.
b.Open pairs.
c.Short pairs.
d.Split pairs.
e.Reversed.
2.Attenuation.
3.NEXT: Perform tests from both ends.
4.Return Loss.
5.ELFEXT.
6.Delay Skew.
J.Unsatisfactory Test Results: If the cable test results are unsatisfactory replace the entire cable
with a new cable. Test new cable to demonstrate acceptability.
3.04 ACCEPTANCE
A.Acceptance will not occur until all specified information and documentation has been provided
to the Owner’s Representative, and all work items, ensuing inspections, and validation of testing
have been completed to the Owner’s satisfaction.
