SECTION 07530
MODIFIED BITUMEN MEMBRANE ROOFING
1.0 GENERAL
1.1 DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK
A. Scope of Work: Includes new two-ply modified bitumen membrane roofing
with associated base flashings, new roof insulation (two-part), new roof drains
and leaders, and other accessories required for a complete roofing system are to
be applied to the new roof .
B. The new roofing system shall provide a 20 year min. total roofing warranty.
1.2 RELATED SECTIONS

C. Section 07620 - Sheet Metal Flashing and Trim
1.3 QUALITY ASSURANCE
A. UL Listing: Provide roofing materials which are currently listed by UL for
Class "A" rating.
B. Roofing System shall comply with the following:
1. Fire / Windstorm Classification: FM Class 1A-90.
2. FM 1-49 Loss prevention Data Sheet for Perimeter Flashing
3. FM 1-28 Loss Prevention Data Sheet for Wind Loads to Roof Systems
and Roof Deck Securement.
4. FM 1-29 Loss Prevention Data Sheet Above Deck Roof Components
5. NRCA Manual for Low-Slope Roofing Construction Details (Fourth
Edition.)
6. SMACNA Manual (Fifth Edition)
7. ASCE 7-98.
C. Manufacturer's Products: Obtain primary roofing materials from only one
manufacturer, to the greatest extent possible. Provide secondary materials
(and materials not available from the primary roofing materials
manufacturer) which are recommended by the manufacturer of the
primary materials. All roofing products are to be delivered to the site and

stored until ready for use in original manufacturer's cartons, containers or
wrappings. Materials delivered without said wrappings are to be removed
from the site and not used on this project.
D. Installer: Subcontractor for the work under this section shall be approved,
authorized, or licensed by the manufacturer of the primary roofing materials and
be located within one hour's normal driving time from project site.
Subcontractor shall be one that is approved by both the manufacturers of
the roof insulation and roof materials.
E. Technical Inspector: See paragraph 3.5 below for Technical Inspection
requirements / qualifications.
F. Weather Conditions: Proceed with roofing and associated work only
when existing and forecasted weather conditions will permit the work to
be performed in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations, and
the established procedures and schedule.
G. Special Precautions: Special adhesives and cements are extremely
flammable. Exercise care in storage, handling and use. Do not store rolls
of roofing membrane, or stockpile ballast in a manner that will localize
roof loadings so as to exceed the live load capacity of either the metal
deck or primary and secondary roof framing members.
1.4 SUBMITTALS
A. Submit manufacturer's data describing each specified roofing system. Include
plans, sections, details in compliance with Performance Requirements listed in
paragraph 1.3-B above, and attachments to other work, for the following:
1. Base flashings, cants, and membrane terminations.
2. Cellular insulating concrete, including slopes.
3. Crickets, saddles, and tapered edge strips, including slopes.
B. Submit letter from manufacturer indicating acceptance of qualifications of
Technical Inspector to perform inspections specified in paragraph 3.5 below.
1.5 COORDINATION
A. The roofing subcontractor shall be responsible for the
requirements and specification compliance of all materials and systems
associated with the new roofing work. Coordinate the installation of roofing
insulation and sheet metal materials and associated work so as to provide a
complete system complying with the combined recommendations of
manufacturers and installers involved in the work. Verify that any penetrations
and other work occurring on the roof deck has been completed prior to installing
roofing materials.

2.0 PRODUCTS
2.1 INSULATION
A. Provide rigid isocyanurate with fiberglass mat facers factory-bonded to a
core of closed cell isocyanurate foam, for installation in single layer providing a
total long-term aged "R" value of 7.15 per inch.
B. Provide perlite top insulation layer, for installation in continuous layer and at
tapered applications (see roof plan), providing a total long-term aged "R" value
of 2.78 per inch. Provide tapererd perlite insulation "crickets" where shown on
drawings.
2.3 ROOFING MEMBRANE
A. Provide GAF 1-0-2-MGPFR system consisting of "Ruberoid" MOP base sheet
and MOP FR cap sheet or equal systems by Siplast or Firestone. System
shall have I-90 rating and shall be installed strictly in accordance with
manufacturer's prescribed guidelines. Warranty shall be GAF "Ruberoid
Liberty" (NDL) 20 year guarentee.
2.4 FLASHING MATERIAL
A. Provide membrane sheet flashing manufactured or recommended by roofing
manufacturer. Install flashing according to manufacturer's guidelines.
2.5 ACCESSORY MATERIALS
A. Splicing cements, adhesives, lap sealants, temporary cut-off mastic,
and other materials as required to complete the installation and
membrane installation.
2.6 ROOF DRAINS
A. Josam 21000 and 26000 (overflow) drains or approved equal products by W.P.
Hickman Co. or Schuller International, as noted on the drawings, with large cast
iron dome, flashing clamp, and deck clamp.
B. Rain Leader piping: service weight coated cast iron with hubless fitting
joints made with cast iron mechanical coupling.
2.7 ROOF HATCHES
A. Provide 36” x 36’ aluminum roof hatch assemblies at locations indicated.
Hatches shall be JL Industries model RHA-4, or equal products by Nystrom or
Bilco.

2.8 ROOF LADDER
A. Provide aluminum roof ladder where shown on the drawings (roof plan – sheet
A1.4) to allow access over roof parapet from office roof area to lobby roof area.
Ladder shall be Model 564 with parapet return and crossover platform by Alaco
Corp., or equal products by Global Equipment Co. or Nall & Company.
3.0 EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLATION - GENERAL
A. Proceed with roofing and associated work only after blocking, nailers,
equipment curbs, roof drains, and other projections through roof have
been installed and the deck and opening frames are complete. The deck
shall be smooth, dry and free of foreign material prior to start of
insulation installation and roofing operation. The roofer is to verify that
the metal deck is well attached to the supporting structure.
3.3 INSTALLATION - ISOCYANURATE and PERLITE INSULATION
A. General: Comply with recommendations of the roof insulation
manufacturer for the installation. Inspect surface to see that all water (or
ice), dirt and debris has been removed.
B. Do not proceed with installation of insulation unless the materials,
equipment, and tradesmen required for the installation of the roofing over
the insulation are at the project site and ready to follow with this work and
immediately (same day) behind the insulation work. Do not install any
more insulation each day than can be covered with waterproof membrane
by the end of that working day, or prior to inclement weather.
C. Insulation shall be laid with tightly butted joints, end-joints staggered in
alternate rows. Isocyanurate insulation shall be mechanically fastened
(not adhered) to the deck using fasteners acceptable to the membrane and
insulation manufacturers, and spaced in accordance with the insulation
manufacturer's recommendation. Place insulation with long dimension at
right angles to deck ribs. Shove into place against installed units.
D. Top layer of 3/4" Perlite insulation shall be installed in layer of type III asphalt
applied to the top of the base isocyanurate insulation.
3.4 INSTALLATION - ROOFING
A. Install roofing membrane system and associated flashing materials in full
accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Allow membrane sheets to
relax prior to splicing and flashing. Ensure that no materials are installed
in a stretched condition. Lap adjoining membrane and flashing sheets in
accordance with the manufacturer's instructions prior to lap seaming.
Carefully clean all contact surfaces to ensure that no contaminating

material injurious to adhesion and sealing remains. Install flashings at all
terminations and penetrations of the roof in accordance with the
manufacturer's published detail sheets and installation instructions.
B. Install drains, rain leaders and other accessories per manufacturer's
instructions and as shown on the drawings.
3.5 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL
A. Technical Inspector: The Contractor will engage a technical inspector
(minimum 3 business days / 24 hours) to monitor installation of the new roof
system. These inspections shall be scheduled to occur at (but not be limited
to) the following stages: At the beginning of the work; inspection of substrate
after removal of existing materials; during flashing installation, just prior to
installation of top roofing ply; a final inspection after 100% completion of the
work.
B. If the technical inspector is not provided by the roofing system manufacturer, an
independent qualified inspector may be employed. If the Inspector is an
independent agent, the Contractor must provide a letter from the manufacturer
indicating acceptance of the qualifications of the proposed Inspector - and - that
compliance with the direction of the independent Technical Inspector will not
compromise or change the roof system manufacturer's warranty.
C. The Technical Inspector shall provide written test / observation reports for each
visit made to the site.
3.5 ROOFING WARRANTY
A. The Contractor shall warrant the materials and workmanship of the roofing
system against leakage for a water-tight installation - and against defects due to
faulty materials, workmanship and contract negligence for a period of two (2)
years following acceptance of the project by the Owner.
B. The Roofing system Manufacturer shall inspect the installation and warrant the
materials and workmanship of the roofing system against leakage for a minimum
period of twenty years following acceptance of the project by the Owner.
Provide a minimum (20) year manufacturer's total roofing system guarantee
(GAF Ruberoid Liberty - NDL) covering the roofing, insulation and flashings.
Guarantee shall commence at the date of substantial completion. Guarantee
shall state that all work is absolutely watertight and free from all leaks, except
those which may develop through Owner's abuse, structural failure, severe
weather, fire or acts of God.
The warranty shall be written to two parties: The University of North Carolina,
and the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority. If ownership of the building should
revert to RDUAA in less than 20 years, the warranty shall transfer to that party.
