The building reopened in November 1990 with a week-end of festivities including an evening gala, followed the next day, December 1, 1990, by a public symposium.

A project to remove asbestos in Ackland was completed at a cost of $154,810, which is included in the final cost of the Ackland renovation project. The Department of Art moved from Ackland into the newly completed building adjacent and connected to Ackland, and Ackland will be used solely for museum functions. This cannot be done effectively, however, until funds are available for renovation of the building. The above mentioned report of 1980 describes what needs to be done to achieve optimum functioning of the building as an art museum. In the meantime, temporary alterations in the area vacated by the Art Department Library have provided a Print Gallery. The Print Gallery in the basement area was returned to works-of-art storage. The work was performed by Physical Plant, and the total cost for completing the project was $51,650. (OVC)

A report entitled A Feasibility Study for the Renovation of the Ackland Art Museum was prepared by Michael Newman, of the architectural firm of Newman Calloway Johnson Van Etten Winfree. It also included engineering information provided by the consulting firm of McMichael and McCracken. In addition to determining the best use of space when funds are available to renovate Ackland, the report also determined that it was not feasible to renovate the building on a piece-meal basis. The heating, air-conditioning, ventilation, lighting, and security systems in the building need extensive renovation, and must be done before the repartitioning, refurbishing, etc., are done. This work will require a major portion of the renovation budget. A temporary wood ramp was constructed on the north side of Ackland for use by the handicapped, replacing the permanent ramp on the south side which was dismantled when construction began on the Art Department Building .

A Studio Art Building was constructed off Airport Road near the Physical Plant. All sculpture activities were removed from Ackland, and New East Annex was vacated at that time. Studio functions in Lenoir moved to the new Studio Art Building .

The Studio Art Building contained studio/offices, instructional laboratories, multi-media seminar rooms, paint and plastics work areas, metals shop, fabrication classroom, tool room, woodworking rooms, classrooms, ceramics area for glazing, clay mixing and plastic, and outside storage. A brick ramp was added at the south entrance, and two toilets were modified for use by the handicapped.

Lenoir Hall was closed as a dining facility, the Studio Division of the Art Department occupied space there for teaching laboratories for design, drawing, painting, and printmaking. Following the completion of Hamilton Hall in 1973 Art Education occupied offices and two laboratories in Caldwell Hall.

The non-museum portion of Ackland Building was centrally air conditioned at a cost of $33,620, and was funded from the Ackland Fund.

During this period Art Department functions became very crowded in Ackland, and New East Annex (demolished in 1977) was used for faculty and teaching studios.

The building was completed in 1958 and was named for William Hayes Ackland, whose will provided money for the building with the stipulation that his tomb, on top of which is a full-length bronze statue of Mr. Ackland, would be located with some visibility in the museum. In addition, the Ackland Trust provides annual income to Ackland for the purchase of works of art chosen by the staff of the Museum. The building housed art galleries, support areas, and offices for the museum; administrative, faculty, and staff offices; classrooms; studios; library; a slide and photograph collections room; and, support areas for the Department of Art.
