Emergency lighting, new exit lights and a fire alarm system were installed in Alderman.

The building was completed in 1937 and was named for Edwin Anderson Alderman, former president of the University and the person who introduced coeducation at the University in Chapel Hill during his four years in office from 1896-1900. He resigned to become President of Tulane University. Dr. Battle said: "His determination to leave us was greatly regretted. The Trustees passed strong resolutions of regret at his resignation. They testified that his progressive and enlightened policy had at all times had the approval of the Board. They realized the wisdom and force of his far reaching plans for the growth and development of the State's educational system. They offered to him their heartfelt thanks for his patient, wise, talented, and successful service." Wilson says: "Alderman, urbane and gifted speaker, leader of the public school movement, succeeded Winston and consolidated the ground his predecessors had won. In the four years of his administration he further increased the enrollment, saw the Summer School expand its usefulness, opened the doors of the University to women, and revealed first to the University itself, and then to the state, what the real purpose of the University was: that it was 'primarily a place of learning where truth must be conserved, discovered, and disseminated, and that as the central dynamo of the State, it should carry to all of the people the light of learning and the love of truth.' " The building contained bedrooms, bathrooms, five lounges, study room, trunk storage, apartment for residence director, laundry room, and two kitchens for student use. Kane; Plumbing: Rowe-Coward, Inc.; Heating: Carolina Heating and Engineering Company 1973 Electrical rewiring was completed for Alderman with funds made available by Legislative approval of $400,000 in self-liquidating funds for renovations to eleven dormitories.
