Alexander contains bedrooms and bathrooms, a small study room, a social room, a large lounge/TV room, mail room, and storage rooms.

Alexander housed couples with children immediately after the war until Victory Village was available.

The building was completed in 1939 to accommodate 118 men students. (AH) The building was named for Dr. Eben Alexander, Professor of Greek from 1886 until his death, except for the period 1893-97 when he was U.S. Minister to Greece, Rumania, and Serbia . At various times he also was supervisor of the library and served as Dean of the Faculty. The Eben Alexander Prize in Greek, established in 1881 and awarded annually to the undergraduate who presents the best rendering into English of selected passages of Greek not previously read, is still awarded. At Professor Alexander's death his widow presented the University with some 400 classical volumes from his library. (WSP) Source of Funds and Cost: Sale of revenue bonds in the amount of $386,000 to supplement a PWA Grant of $315,805 for three dormitories--Alexander, Kenan, and Whitehead--plus extensive additions and renovations to the Carolina Inn. Coble 1942 A newspaper clipping in the North Carolina Collection reported that Alexander was to be the headquarters for the Naval Pre-Flight Training Program. Manly, Ruffin, Grimes, and Mangum also were used to house cadets.
