The Capital Improvement Project Request for 1987 contained the following information from the School of Medicine: "In 1983 the School of Medicine and North Carolina Memorial Hospital engaged the Executive Consulting Group, Inc. of Bellevue , Washington , to study ambulatory care here. Specifically, the ambulatory patient study was directed at identifying the course we should take in accomplishing the following major objectives: Insure that ambulatory care programs are maintained at a sufficient level to meet the educational mission of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. Identify programmatic and marketing strategies which will enable ambulatory care programs to survive in an increasingly competitive environment. Increase the operating efficiency of our ambulatory service programs. "The ambulatory care study considered many factors including, but not limited to, finances, payer mix, increasing competition for patients, incentives, efficiency, patient referral patterns, new technologies, marketing, educational mission, and the role of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and NCMH as state institutions. During the course of the study, a decision was made to phase out management of the clinics by NCMH and place those responsibilities with the School of Medicine. The current favorable results from that decision are encouraging. The study results have convincingly shown the need for the UNC-CH School of Medicine to plan and construct a multi-specialty ambulatory care facility." Funds were authorized by the General Assembly in 1987. A ground breaking ceremony was held in 1990, and the building was completed and partially occupied in 1992. The dedication ceremony will be held in the spring of 1993. The building contains the following clinics: Dermatology, Orthopedic, Rheumatology, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Surgery, Pediatrics, ENT, and Medicine; procedure and ancillary areas: Day-op, Laboratory, Radiology, Pharmacy, Pulmonary Laboratory, Nutrition Clinic, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Hearing, Vanular Laboratory, EKG/Cardiac Graphics, and optical shop; and, support services, medical records, registration, social work, admitting, and transportation.
